The Maine Mountain Ponds project explores a variety of research questions in nine small, high-elevation lakes in the northern Appalachian Mountains. We are particularly interested in lake ecosystem response to changing geochemical conditions (i.e. “recovery” from acid rain impacts) and the effects of climate change on watersheds across elevational gradients.

Get involved
Observations from recreational lake visitors can be important data points for tracking seasonal transitions, such as ice formation and breakup or condition of lakeshore vegetation. If you visit any of these nine lakes, please consider taking a photo and uploading it to Instagram, using #MMP followed by the pond you’re visiting (for example, #MMPTumbledown). You can also use the webform on our ice phenology page.
If you have any questions, or are interested in collaboration of use of these datasets, please reach out using our contact page.
